I had to replace a HD in a client's Dell Demension 3000, and even after a bios flash it would keep comming up with a "Primary drive 1 not found strike f1 to continue, f2 to run set up." error upon boot. When you hit F1 WinBlow$ would boot as normal.

All hardware and set up was hunky dory - but I ffigured it out - this goes for all dells:

* Reboot system and enter the BIOS Setup by pressing F2.
* Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and Num Lock.
* Press ALT + E then ALT + F (should hear beep) then ALT + B

Your system will reboot - and may give a message about detecting drives. From here on out it will boot normally.

Basically it has to do with an error in the IDE controllers. They need to make a patch, but if anyone encounters this - it's a quick fix.
