If I wasn't so busy workin' on my perpetual motion machine I could research this one but I think I will hit you guys up first -
It seems that ever since I got Vonage when I leave the PC it is hooked up idle for an an hour or more I can no longer get online... phone works but no ping... reboot fixes it - anyone heard of this?

Addition - Running: XP Pro Comcast High Speed All apropriate apps - no errors, viruses, spyware etc... Vonage Phone works which means there is signal...
Thank god no one has asked me to fix this for them yet because I still can't find any info on how to fix my own, and I never encountered this before.
do you know if the vonage appliance you hook your computer into uses PPPoE or DHCP to register an IP for your computer?
either way, next time it happens, open a command prompt and type in: "ipconfig /all" to see what's going on with the IPs and such. If nothing's readily apparent there, try "ipconfig /renew" to see if you can get a new IP address & get back out on the web.

Odd - I didn't think of that Strange thing is neither the cable modem or the vonage modem indicate any problem with connection, which led me to beleive that it was something blocking me on the HD itself (hence why I can use phone but not connect to anything via PC
btw, what hardware plugs into what? it sounds like you have two modem devices... does the vonage stuff plug into the cable modem, and then that goes to the wall-jack? does the vonage modem hook in somewhere else?
no matter what, the phone is likely VoIP, which means it gets its own IP address that's seperate from the computer's. I imagine it's negotiating its own DHCP w/ the home office (rather than going through NAT), such that it gets a publicly-viewable IP address.
if that's the case, then you might have something wrong w/ the cable modem itself. nonetheless, i recommend the ip checking, to see what's up. if you can do the same on your phone somehow, i recommend it.

Get this - microsoft recommends that you turn of standby (which I use so it will prompt for password) and that should fix it - that does not seem plausable to me. I have standby set for 15 minutes - and it works fine when I return.
I did however go into Device manager to check the NIC, and 'Allow Windows to Turn This Device Off To Save Power' was checked. I don't know why I didn't think about this in the first place, but hell, we can't remember everything all the time. It seems this only happens after being idle for hours - so I will let you know in the morning if it worked.
From the M$ SITE: click on Advanced Tab and be sure these settings are okay: Options: [ ] Always show icon on the task bar [ ] Prompt for password when computer resumes from Standby Uncheck Both of them or if you prefer the Icon for the batter to show check this box only.
