MissMeg interview by lovernios (completed Aug 18, 05)
lovernios: Personal datas! Is your name really Meg? What is your age? What is your cosmic age, are you an old soul? What is your sign? Pets? What is the color/look of the walls in your room? Just how tall are you? Are you athletic at all, play sports? What is your favorite perfume or fragrance?
MissMeg: Yes, yes, yes…my real name is Meghan Renee ***** and I’m 17 years old. And if by an older soul you’re implicating I don’t act my age, than no. I take a bit of pride in not just being your average teenager but I’ll admit I have my moments when I show my immaturity. I’m a Virgo but not reliant on astrology to dictate the means by which I live. My only pet is my cat Atticus, who's been titled as being "my little black child." My room is constantly changing at the moment I’m living in a rental house and can’t paint my walls so their a boring white, but one we get moved into the house my family is busy building, I’m thinking gold on the walls with many red accents. I like living in a room with a comfortable, but exotic appeal, I suppose. *sighs* I happen to be a rather embarrassing 5’10 (although others argue I’m only 5’9???, others like my doctor…) Athletic? Yes, very much so. I play soccer at the moment as the goalkeeper for the Monticello High School girls soccer team and am also the goalkeeper for the Illini Soccer Club. I used to play for the Illinois Olympic Development Program but had to quit due to financial issues… As far as honors there go, I’m one of the top-ranked keepers in the state at the club and ODP level…but high school, well, with a losing record of 2-14-1…our team has a bit of a ways to go. (Actually caring about the sport might help.) Fragrance? Cinnamon and vanilla…all the way.
lovernios: So, who is Miss Meg? What is your main 'job' description at this time in your life? What are your likes and interests? Do you have anything unique or creative that occupies your time, besides work/school/internet? What is your real-life personality like, what do you project as a person?
MissMeg: Miss Meg is a very average person. Really. At the moment I’m pulling in an astonishing $700 a month working at both a grocery store and a movie theatre. (Did you know the average large bucket of popcorn with “extra??? butter is 1300 calories? I wish I could throw that little tidbit at the customers…heh.) I’ve got a license now to start selling my jewelry at our weekly outdoor market…I just need to finish making enough pieces to sell. So, I suppose jewelry making and creating other pieces of art occupies what of my time is leftover after everything else. And writing, lots of creative writing, but that’s more for personal gain than anything else. As for my personality, what you’ve seen on Tsi is me. My posts are basically the first thing that shoots out of my mouth after I see what you guys write, and as a person I project my feelings and opinions honestly. After years of being a relentless people pleaser and not having the capacity to say “no??? to anything, I’ve developed my own opinions and thoughts and won’t let people walk all over me anymore. So overall, I’m quite friendly…but rather sarcastic which I think tends to reflect negatively at times.
lovernios: What are your general views on people, religion and politics? Are people to be taken seriously or with a grain of salt most of the time? Do you see the world as a dark, scary and violent place, or is there always a ray of sunshine in your outlook?
MissMeg: People can be irritating, but I definitely think that most of them deserve a chance, I try not to let first impressions be lasting impressions and I try really hard not to judge people only on outward appearance. I hate when I catch myself or others doing that. After working among people for the past few months, it’s amazing what you learn about them…all of them. I think anything anyone says though should be taken with the proverbial grain of salt at times, but as you get to know them and develop a bit of trust, then I’d love to believe them.
Of course the world is dark, scary, and violent. The proof is everywhere isn’t it? Even in your own hometown you can see the darker side of the world. But you know what’s great? There’s going to be something that makes that scariness worthwhile. So yes, not to sound like I’ve suddenly caught Little-Orphan-Annie Syndrome, there’s a bit light if you’re willing to look for it.
lovernios: What is the mission in life of Miss Meg? Just what the heck are you going to do with yourself? If there was one thing you wanted to accomplish in your life, what would it be? Who are a few heroes of yours...?
MissMeg: I would like to teach, and I love to learn. So I’m hoping to become a professor’s aide at a small university, and hopefully become an English professor myself. I want to study the older literature and continue teaching myself different languages. As for things I’d like accomplish, I would love to publish books, both fictional and non. I can’t say there are too many people who I can look up to with some great admiration, but I have a deep respect for anyone willing to put their lives or their dreams at risk for their beliefs. I’ve been reading a couple books on Nelson Mandela actually, and I’m really impressed by him.
lovernios: What is your biggest frustration with life? What is the burden you must bear, or thing you must overcome, to get where you are going? How are things going at present?
MissMeg: Other people, especially older friends and my family, tend to dismiss my feelings and my goals on the basis I’m too young to really know what I want yet, or that I don’t have the worldly experience to have my own opinions. My thoughts that I have taken the time to derive and opinions that I’ve drawn from my own experience are the most sacred things to me and it actually hurts to hear from people that I don’t know what I’m saying.
lovernios: Art stuff... pop and otherwise! What are your main artistic likes, be they sound, paintings, sculpture, whatever? What do you like to read? Novels? Poems? Did you ever do any live performance yourself, in a play or performing music? What kind of music/performer is the type/one that really speaks to your soul? Do you attend any live performances of any kind, like plays? Do you ever travel for art?
MissMeg: Paintings, charcoal drawings and black and white photography with Renaissance sculpture thrown in for cultured taste. Although sound is something I couldn’t live without, I don’t have as specific a taste. I like what sounds good to Miss Meg, so that leaves me with a spattering from each genre. I like things with a low, subtle rhythm but then I also like a loud guitar playing all over the place. As far as meaningful music, the artists who I find myself listening to when I need something to help me find my peace or need to think come from my dad’s old CD collection. Singers like Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins have always had special places in my CD collection. I love attending plays and musical performances because unlike a movie or a music video you’re seeing someone practice their art in the open. I think of it almost as though they’re taking a risk just by being there because if they miss a line or a beat that they could go back and fix in the studio, it could change their fans’ opinion of them, because fans can more be critical than the people being paid to critique them. I also like performing and being in plays as well, I sang for a few months in one of my friend’s little bands (nothing big at all, but fun nonetheless). Traveling for my art? Not so much, but I would love to, and hope to once I’ve actually established a life for myself.
lovernios: Internet related stuff... do you like Al Gore's internet? Is it useful for anything, besides eating clocks (time)? What of this TSi place? What do you get out of your use of the internet? Is it mainly socializing type stuff for you, or do you use it for research, ordering crap from Amazon, directions or anything like that? What about freedom of speech on the net? Do you download a lot of mp3?
MissMeg: Of course I like it, and not just for time-wasting. I think it’s a great research tool because you have more information at your fingertips than you might expect and I’ve gotten pretty good at using the internet as a handy supplier of research material, but I don’t rely on it. I’m too much of a bookworm to keep from using books and articles as research material as well. As far as socializing though, I have Tsi and another ezBoard message board that I devote my time to, but outside of those and AIM and MSN and e-mail, that’s it for my socializing. I’ve never really ordered anything offline, but I have downloaded mp3’s (lots) and believe one should have freedom of speech no matter what the circumstances are, so long as they’re not hurting me.
lovernios: Family/background stuff... Where are you and your family from? Does everybody get along (lol)? What about your ancestry? Who is the biggest influence on you, in a good way?
MissMeg: On my mother’s side, we’re all born and bred Illinoisians, but they like to take that one step further and turn that into flamboyant redneckism or what I like to call “Git ‘er Dun??? Syndrome. However, there’s quite a bit of Irish blood in the mix there too and I know my grandfather’s father was an Irishman. Everyone gets along well enough except that they think I’m an uppity bisexual art freak hippy liberal. In my immediate family we’re all at ends with each other but I’m pretty sure there’s mutual like…I think. On my dad’s side they are very much so Italian and it shows in my family. All of us girls (I have three younger sisters) have long dark hair, although I’m the only one with the curl… But I really enjoy my Italian grandparents, when I was younger my grandmother taught me quite a bit of Italian (that I really wish I had held onto). But the greatest influences I have lay with my other grandparents on my mother’s side (my paternal grand-parents have lost a bit of their sense over the years, but I have a deep respect for my grandma Anna *******, she lived through World War II as a young girl and I’ve heard some pretty terrible stories of things that she’s survived). My maternal grandparents have opened their home time and time again when I need safe harbor from home or any other situation. There are things I’ve told my grandmother that my mum still doesn’t know.
lovernios: What is your style or look? Can you leave the house looking like crap once in a while, or not? What is the type of car you have? Do you look good in a hat?
MissMeg: Hmm, very artsy, I think. I know in what pictures I’ve posted it doesn’t look like it, but I love adding color and bright exuberant accessories to what I wear. I have a collection of bright scarves and wraps and I love putting together unlikely combinations of different articles of clothing and still managing to pull it off and look good. Right now though I’ve abandoned a lot of my “alternative??? look and making it still bright and different, but much classier. I like looking sophisticated much more than anything else, but I’ve still been known to wear sweatpants to school from time to time. I dress to please myself, not others, and I take a bit of pride in not caring how people think I look. I’ll admit though, I’m more than self-conscious about how I look and have myself fairly convinced that I’m pretty damn ugly, but I don’t really care about it anymore and it tends to be more of a joke than a real problem. Just little bits left over of old dysfunctional me.
My car is a little blue, ten year old Saturn SL-2 with only 70,000 miles on it when I bought it (at $2000), and one of my friends affectionately named him Adonis Lorenzo…sounds like a porn star name actually…
And yes, I’ve been told I look fabulous in hats.
lovernios: What is the Miss Meg philosophy of life as she knows it? Is life a tremendously complicated and tedious task all the time, or is there a way to cut through all of that and find some peace?
MissMeg: I take life for what it is…life is a learning experience and you only live once. It doesn’t have to complicated so long as you think about what you’re doing and I think that you should be living for the moment with several important destinations in mind for you to get to eventually. But above all enjoy it and love what you do, life is too short to waste a moment. I try to appreciate what I’m doing at all times, even if it is complicated and tedious.
lovernios: Thanks Miss Meg, any last words you might have?
MissMeg: You’re perfectly welcome, and I don’t really know what to say. I’m not much for impressive closings, so I’ll simply say thanks and good night!
